How to find the perfect afterschool program for your child in New York City

Choosing an afterschool program for your child is an important decision. NYC offers hundreds of free and low-cost options across all five boroughs. This guide will help you navigate your choices.

COMPASS

Ages 5-11 (K-5) Elementary school programs with homework help, arts, and enrichment

SONYC

  1. Know Your Child’s Age Programs are designed for specific age groups. COMPASS serves elementary (K-5), SONYC serves middle school (6-8), and Learn & Earn serves older teens (14-21).

  2. Consider Location Look for programs near your home, school, or work. Transportation can be a challenge, so proximity matters.

  3. Check the Schedule Most programs run 2:30-6:00 PM on school days. Some Cornerstone and Beacon programs offer evening and weekend hours.

  4. Review Activities Each program offers different activities. Some focus on academics, others on sports, arts, or STEM. Match the program to your child’s interests.

  5. Visit the Site Before enrolling, visit the program location. Meet the staff, see the facilities, and ask questions.
